The aim of this project was to develop the hand-pinching skills of The Exchange ceramics Makers*
From a handful of clay, and with no prior knowledge of ceramics, the Makers experimented with hand-pinching - an ancient technique - to create a series of unique pots that were then personalised through experimenting with mark-making tools on the surface of the pots.
The Makers were also asked to be critical of their work through a weekly pottery "throw down" where they had to choose their least favourite pots to recycle and their favourite to be fired.
Ho Lai, Ceramics Workshop Manager: “Hand-pinching is fundamental in ceramics craft. It creates communication between the hand and the clay which leads to a deeper understanding of materiality and 'simple' craftsmanship. Throughout this project, it has been wonderful to share laughter and banter with the Makers - these pots capture the essence of our community.”
*The Makers are a team of volunteer participants who make things that can be used by the community or sold to raise money for the exchange's community programme. In exchange for their time, the makers work alongside some talented craftspeople - like ho - to develop their technical skills and enjoy being part of an incredible social and creative making team.
