We’re off for our Winter holidays!
The Exchange will be closed to the public from Sunday 22 December until Tuesday 14 January inclusive, re-opening on Wednesday 15 January at 2:00pm with a Warm Spaces afternoon tea from 2:30pm - 4:30pm and a free Art of Calm ‘Slow Stitching’ drop-in workshop. Everyone welcome!
The Garden Room shop & the Greenwich Pantry @ The Exchange cafe both open at 10:30am on Thursday 16 January.

Have you got an idea for a community activity, event or project? Are you interested in kickstarting it at The Exchange and need some support? Well, why not become an event partner? Many of our events are devised and delivered by passionate members of the community, and our programme has included culture days, dog shows, classical concerts, craft markets and much more.
At this event, Co-Director Sarah Batten will work with you on your event proposal. When ready, you can then submit your idea to our Board of Trustees who will make a decision on what ideas we can support, and on what support we can offer.

Become A Maker
Anyone can become an Exchange Maker and support us with our mission for community and craft. As a Maker, you will work alongside some incredibly talented craft professionals, developing your skills in ceramics, garden making, textiles or timber, whilst making or maintaining things that can be used and enjoyed by the community, or sold to raise money for our community programme.
If you are interested in getting involved, come along to a ‘Become a Maker’ session to find out more about what it means to be a Maker, and the benefits of joining one of our teams. Currently these opportunities are only available during the week.

6-week wheel throwing pottery course: 1/6
Join us on a Saturday morning for a 6-week pottery throwing class where you will learn the basics of throwing, including centering the clay on the wheel, throwing cylinders and bowls, and trimming the bases of your work. This course is suitable for everyone from complete beginners to those who are more confident on the wheel and would like to improve their skills.
Designed and led by Merissa Hylton, a multidisciplinary artist and educator based in London.

Old Library History Tour - Spanish Language

History Talk: The Great Thames Disaster
On 03 September 1878, there was a collision between a passenger paddle steamer, the Princess Alice and a collier, the Bywell Castle, that resulted in the drowning of 640 people. Join ex-Chair of the Erith and Belvedere Local History Society, Ken Chamberlain, for an illustrated talk about this forgotten local tragedy.

Join Ruth Howard in a new “Exploring Watercolour painting” workshop.
In this new weekly workshop, Ruth will help you with guidance on what could be a new and fascinating hobby for you!
You can use paints to create work that you want to share with others i.e. greetings cards, or maybe create a watercolour journal for your own use. Either way, Ruth will help you on a creative path and give you the benefit of over 20 years of teaching beginners to paint.

Become A Maker
Anyone can become an Exchange Maker and support us with our mission for community and craft. As a Maker, you will work alongside some incredibly talented craft professionals, developing your skills in ceramics, garden making, textiles or timber, whilst making or maintaining things that can be used and enjoyed by the community, or sold to raise money for our community programme.

Tool Restoration & Sharpening Workshop
Join our drop-in session at the Timber Workshop, to learn some of the skills involved in restoring, sharpening, and fine tuning hand tools.
Workshop manager, Matthew Mead, will be on hand to help turn well-loved and rust-pitted chisels and planes into polished, sharp-edged tools that are a real pleasure to use.
No need to bring anything with you as this session will continue the work of restoring tools donated by local residents to give them a productive second life at The Exchange!

Are you aged between 14 and 18 and interested in radio? Journalism? Podcasts? YouTube?
In An Introduction to Radio Journalism, you’ll learn all about media production by getting to grips with equipment and creating a radio news segment.
This is a free course that lets young people get more hands-on experience with creating the content they read, listen to and watch. It is designed to teach young people the full extent of what goes into creating the media around them; be it serious new programmes, investigative podcasts or even celebrity TikToks.
You will have access to training with recording equipment and editing software, meaning you can get really stuck in! Over the 3 sessions, members will create a full local radio news segment, taking ideas from planning, through recording and editing, and into post-production. You will learn new technical skills, work with recording equipment and get insights into how the media industry works. This course will also develop teamwork skills as members will collaborate together on making their final product.
This course is designed and led by Robert Gammon-Ross, a local freelance content writer, audio producer and video editor.

One of the first techniques you will learn is pinching - pinching clay involves using your fingers to shape and mould the clay into different forms, such as cups or plates. You will then learn coiling, where you roll out long ropes of clay and stack them on top of each other to create shapes like bowls or vases. Slab building involves rolling out flat pieces of clay and then cutting and piecing them together to make larger objects like boxes or trays.

Create more positive, calmer you and increase your sense of gratitude & happiness with Wellbeing Journaling. Rediscover your inner artist and love for creativity and over the 6 weeks build a journaling habit which helps you with sleep and focus.
We will be creating journaling pages from scratch using scrapbooking and art materials, we will doodle and hand-letter in our journals. Each week we will explore different self-care topics.
There is a power in sharing the space and journaling together.

Join us on a Saturday morning for a 6-week hand building pottery class.
Pottery hand building is a wonderful way to create your own unique clay creations using just your hands and some simple tools. In this course, you will learn how to coil, pinch, and slab clay to make a variety of beautiful pottery items.
One of the first techniques you will learn is pinching - pinching clay involves using your fingers to shape and mould the clay into different forms, such as cups or plates. You will then learn coiling, where you roll out long ropes of clay and stack them on top of each other to create shapes like bowls or vases. Slab building involves rolling out flat pieces of clay and then cutting and piecing them together to make larger objects like boxes or trays.
Designed and led by Merissa Hylton, a multidisciplinary artist and educator based in London.

Festive Plant Pot Painting
Plant Pot Painting returns with a festive twist. Learn how to decorate your own terracotta plant pots and create unique designs. We will cover the basics, such as what type of paint to use, and we'll also share a variety of techniques, some suitable for total beginners and others which are a little more advanced. Paints and materials will be provided.
Please note that this workshop is free to attend if you are bringing your own terracotta pot, otherwise you can purchase a pot for £6 on the day to decorate and take home with you.

Carnegie Ensemble: A Baroque Christmas Concert
The Ensemble return for another candlelit Baroque concert. The programme will include Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.5, Vivaldi "Autumn" from The Four Seasons and Baroque arias performed by the talented mezzo soprano Louisa Stuart-Smith. And, with a nod to this year's Olympics, there will be some French Baroque added to the repertoire, music by Rameau and Lully.

Are you confident with the basics and ready to take your crochet skills to the next level? This 6-week course is designed to help you master new stitches while creating a beautiful winter scarf.
Every week you’ll get a detailed tutorial and individual guidance to learn a new stitch to use in your scarf. You’ll also receive a weekly pattern challenge to practise your pattern reading skills at home. By the end of the course you will have learned some new skills, created a unique scarf and, if you’ve accepted the pattern challenges, you’ll also have some smaller items perfect for gifting.
What to bring: 5mm crochet hook and 200g DK yarn (to make a scarf 12cm wide x 120cm long, including fringe, but feel free to use extra yarn to make the scarf as long as you like!).

Get mindful and creative, and experience the meditative power of neurographic art in this immersive and meditative workshop. Through making spontaneous lines and shapes, your doodling will become beautiful, abstract artworks.

Handmade Paper Making
Learn how to create your own paper using plant materials with artist Anna Hughes. Anna will also demonstrate how to make your own greeting cards using your handmade paper, and will guide you through illustrating your cards using botanical inks to create a beautiful, natural and unique design. All participants will make an assortment of different paper and a greeting card, as well as receiving an information worksheet to practice these techniques at home.
Please note that the paper will need to be left to dry and can be collected or posted to you at a later date.

Become A Maker
Anyone can become an Exchange Maker and support us with our mission for community and craft. As a Maker, you will work alongside some incredibly talented craft professionals, developing your skills in ceramics, garden making, textiles or timber, whilst making or maintaining things that can be used and enjoyed by the community, or sold to raise money for our community programme.
If you are interested in getting involved, come along to a ‘Become a Maker’ session to find out more about what it means to be a Maker, and the benefits of joining one of our teams. Currently these opportunities are only available during the week.
